In 1994, Siemens had a contract to upgrade a portion of the residential phone system in East Germany. The old copper wire system was being replaced with a fiber optic network that terminated at curbside devices known as FITL's (Fiber In The Loop). The FITL's were controlled using Nixdorf PC's designated as OMCT's (Operation Maintenance and Control Terminal) or EOMT's (Extended Operation Maintenance Terminals). I developed and tested software for the EOMT to perform file transfers and client/server functions to and from the OMCT's and the FITL's. This software was written in C and ran under the SCO UNIX operating system. I completed my portion of this project in mid 1994.

In August of 1996, Siemens issued me a new contract to develop an object oriented database for a system to control a combined cable TV and telephony network. I developed appropriate benchmarks and evaluated several object oriented databases (OODB's) and object oriented wrappers for relational databases. After selecting the Versant OODB, I developed a database schema to support the required functions of the control system. When this project was completed, Siemens assigned me similar work on digital loop carrier networks that were either developed internally or as joint marketing agreements. These projects were developed using C++ under Windows NT.

My most recent assignment for Siemens was to develop a web based management system for a digital loop carrier network. This allowed Siemens to use off the shelf software for the user interface and communications portions of the project and concentrate development effort on the server side. Two types of servers were involved. A Windows NT server maintained a database for functions such as network mapping and event logging. Each network element also had an embedded web server to support functions such as configuration and control. This project was developed using a combination of HTML, JavaScript, Java applets and CGI programs written in C++.

Design documentation was prepared using Rational Rose and Microsoft Word.
