In February of 1982, VR Information Systems in Austin, Texas hired me as a Software Engineer to work on their VLSI layout system. Shortly after I joined the company, VR was purchased by Tektronix and became part of their CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) Systems Division. At Tektronix, I developed new automatic placement and routing subsystems and added features to existing interactive and automatic layout subsystems for gate arrays. All code was written in FORTRAN and ran in a VAX/VMS environment.
