In September of 1983, GE hired me as a Computer Scientist in their North Carolina Microelectronics Center.
I developed both automatic and interactive graphics tools to perform layout of integrated circuits.
Functions performed by my tools included gate array master design,
development and maintenance of a component macro library,
component placement, wire routing and integration of the design process.
Software tools ran on Tektronix graphics terminals in a VAX/VMS environment and
were developed in FORTRAN, MainSail and C languages.

In January of 1987, GE promoted me to Project Manager and transferred me to their Calma subsidiary in California.
There I developed automatic and interactive placers and routers in C to run in the Sun/UNIX environment.
